Efter kollaps på scenen fejrer mesteren sin runde dag på scenen i Barcelona.
Og selvom vi andre er langt væk, bør vi bruge en del af dagen på at fejre en af rock-æraens allerstørste poeter.Som én af de ganske få kan Cohen med sine ord løfte hjertet helt derop, hvor det næsten kommer i klemme i halsen.
Og mens andre komponister og poeter kæmper med ordene for blot at få dem til at matche livets egen skønhed, så kan Cohen som måske den eneste gøre alle de magiske følelser, der lever i hjertet, endnu smukkere.
Her er ti af mine personlige favoritter. Ord og melodier, der efter årtier stadig får hårene til at rejse sig på armene og fingeren til automatisk at trykke på "repeat"-knappen.
1: "Democracy" (fra "The Future", 1992)
"It's coming from the women and the men, O baby we'll be making love again
We'll be going down so deep, that the river's going to weep
And the mountain's gonna shout Amen!
It's coming like a tidal flood beneath the lunar sway
Imperial, mysterious, in amorous array
Democrycy is coming to the USA."
Efter den salve, kan det være svært at tænke på både samleje og demokrati på den gamle måde.
2: "The Night Comes on" (fra "Various Postitions", 1984)
"I went down to the place, where I knew she lay waiting
Under the marble and the snow
I said mother I'm frightend The thunder and the lightning
I'll never come through this alone.
She said I'll be with you, my shawl rapped around you.
My hand on your head as you go
And then the night came on. It was very calm
I wanted the night to go on and on. But she said:
Go back, go back to the world."
Dengang var Leonard stadig hærget af depression. Men ingen kan som han forvandle selvmordstanker og et besøg på moderens grav til så smuk poesi.
3: "Everybody Knows" (fra "I'm Your Man", 1988)
"Everybody knows that you love me baby, everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful, give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet,
but there were so many people you just had to meet, without your clothes
And everybody knows."
Depressionen svinder væk og Leonard nye og dybt sarkastiske jeg tager magten. Jalousi er en by i Rusland.
4: "The Traitor" (fra "Recent Songs", 1979)
"So daily now I renew my idle duty
I touch her here and there, I know my place
I kiss her open mouth and I praise her beauty
And people call me tritor to my face"
Er et forhold på automatpilot nogensinde blevet beskrevet så præcist og smertefuldt.
5: "Ain't no Cure for Love" (fra "I'm Your Man", 1988)
"I see you on the subway and I see you on the bus
I see you lying down with med I see you waking up
I see your hands I see your hair, your bracelet and your brush
And I call to you, I call to you but I don't call soft enough
There ain´t no cure for love"
Den smukke og relativt ukomplicerede kærlighed lever også i Cohens univers.
6: "Suzanne" (fra "Leonard Cohen", 1967)
"And she shows you where to look among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed there are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love and they will lean that way forever.
While Suzanne holds the mirror"
Mere mystisk og smukt kan en kvinde og et årti (60'erne) ikke opsummeres.
7: "The Window" (fra "Recent Songs", 1979)
"Why do you stand by the window, Abandoned to beauty and pride
The thorn of the night in your bosom, the spear of age in your side"
Var der nogen, der sagde "alderen trykker"?
8: "Paper-Thin Hotel" (fra "Death of a Ladies' Man", 1977)
"The walls of this hotel are paper-thin
Last night I heard you making love to him
The struggle mouth to mouth and limp to limp
The grunt of unity when he came in"
Ja, Leo kan også være lidt beskidt. Her er han bare så glad for at være sluppet af med kæresten - Nu er det den ny elskers tur.
9: "Alexandra Leaving" (Ten New Songs", 2001)
"For someone long prepared for the occasion
In full command of every plan you wrecked
Do not choose a coward's explanation
that hides behind the cause and the effect"
Selv når kæresten skrider, bør man kun tænke på tiden, hun velsignede én med.
10: "Dance Me To The End of Love" (fra "Various Positions", 1984)
"Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
Dance me through the panic till I'm gathered safely in
Lift me like an olive brach and be my homeward dove
Oh, dance me to the end of love."
Vi almindeligt dødelige fyre ville bare sige "øøh, skal vi bolle". Men Leonard har en lidt mere poetisk måde at stille samme spørgsmål.
Og dermed en betydeligt større chance for et positivt svar.
