På den amerikanske nationaldag - 4. juli - gennemførte en gruppe aktivister en demonstration, som fik politiet til at evakuere Liberty Island ud for New York, hvor Frihedsgudinden står,

Aktivisternes formål var at demonstrere mod den amerikanske regerings behandling af illegale indvandrere i USA.

Indledningsvis gjorde demonstranterne opmærksom på deres sag med et banner, men da politiet trådte til for at afbryde demonstrationen valgte en kvinde at klatre op på Frihedsgudinden, og det afstedkom en - ifølge nyhedsbureauet AP - knap fire timers seance, hvor politiet forsøgte at overtale kvinden til at komme ned af egen fri vilje.

Forsøget blev filmet af helikoptere og foreviget på billeder.

Kvinden er senere blevet identificeret som 44-årige Therese Okoumou, der selv er indvandrer fra Kongo.

»Vi ved ikke, om hun havde planlagt dette, før hun kom til Liberty Island, eller om det var et spontant indfald,« siger Jay W. Walker fra gruppen Rise and Resist til AP.
