Tydelig rørt kunne skuespilleren Viola Davis natten til mandag træde op på scenen til Emmy-prisuddelingen i Los Angeles og som den første sorte kvinde nogensinde holde en takketale for statuetten for 'bedste kvindelige hovedrolle i en drama-serie'.

Prisen fik hun for sin rolle som Annalise Keating i serien 'How to Get Away with Murder'.
Nattens Emmy-prisuddelingen blev dermed i sandhed historisk. Udover at prisen for 'bedste kvindelige hovedrolle i en drama-serie' gik til en sort kvinde for første gang, satte tv-serien 'Game of Thrones' med danske Nikolaj Coster-Waldau i en af hovedrollerne rekord og tog 12 statuetter med hjem - blandt andet for bedste drama-serie.
I sin takketale citerede Viola Davis den afro-amerikanske abolitionist Harriet Tubman, der blev født ind i slaveri i omkring 1820, senere flygtede fra det og over en årrække foretog i alt 19 rejser til sydstaterne for at hjælpe slaver til flugt. Trods en dusør for hendes pågribelse blev hun aldrig fanget, og hun menes at have hjulpet op mod 300 slaver ud af slaveriet.
»I mine tanker kan jeg se en linje. Og på den anden side af den linje kan jeg se grønne egne og skønne blomster og smukke, hvide kvinder med deres arme strukket ud mod mig hen over linjen, men jeg kan ikke komme derhen. Jeg kan ikke krydse den linje,« sagde Viola Davis i sin tale og fortsatte:
»Lad mig fortælle jer noget: det eneste, der adskiller farvede kvinder fra alle andre er muligheder. Du kan ikke vinde en Emmy for roller, der simpelthen ikke er der.«
Til sidst i sin tale takkede Viola Davis de mange af de andre sorte kvinder til stede i salen, blandt andet hendes med-nominerede Taraji P. Hensen, 'Scandal'-skuespilleren Kerry Washington og skuespilleren Halle Berry.
»Tak fordi I tog over over den linje,« sluttede Viola Davis sin tale til store klapsalver fra hele salen.
